a synopsis

Clever-Clogs and the Cunning Princess both start telling their stories of what happened to them.

Clever-Clogs tells how he was guarding a tower. The Princess tells how she read lots and lots of books and came to know everything in the world. Then, because telling two stories at once is confusing, the agree to tell their stories in bits, one after the other.

One night, Clever-Clogs hears a noise from inside the tower. A voice asks him to open the door - which Clever-Clogs does. Out pops the Naughty Imp, who promises to help Clever-Clogs whenever he is needed.

Yelena is being pressured by her father to get married. But she devises a game of hide-and-seek to test her suitors. They have three goes. If they are found all three times, then it's off with their heads!

Clever-Clogs sets off to have some great adventures - he fights pirates; he fights bears; he is rescued from the desert by a camel - all with help from the Naughty Imp. Then he enters a cave and discovers an Underground Kingdom with a Palace - but it's empty of people. There is a terrible rumbling and quaking.

Yelena tells how she ended up in this same Underground Kingdom as a captive after being tricked by the Naughty Imp.

Clever-Clogs reveals that the rumbling and quaking is the Naughty Imp snoring and that the Naughty Imp is King of the Underground Kingdom. Clever-Clogs persuades King Naughty Imp that he is his son. King Naughty Imp is delighted and gives him the keys to the Palace with the instruction not to open a particular door. But Clever-Clogs opens the door and by doing so lets the Cunning Princess escape.

Clever-Clogs sets off to win the Cunning Princess back. He manages to get hold of the wings that she uses to fly - so that she can't escape - and takes her to meet his mother and to prepare for a wedding. But while Clever-Clogs is away, the Cunning Princess tricks the mother into letting her get hold of the wings - and off she flies.

Clever-Clogs is ready to give up but, encouraged by the Naughty Imp, he goes to the Cunning Princess's Palace to try the task. The Cunning Princess always wins because she has a magic mirror that enables her to see everything in the world. But when Clever-Clogs hides behind the mirror she can't see him. In her frustration she smashes the mirror. And they decide that neither of them is the loser in this game - they have both won.
