Dancing with Angels premiered at the Winnipeg Fringe in July 2003 and then moved on
to Saskatoon and Edmonton. The production was a CBC Pick of the Fringe in all
three cities. In 2004, a tour of schools and colleges across Peru
and Chile provoked great excitement amongst student audiences in terms
both of its content and theatricality. Dancing
with Angels is currently playing in colleges and schools in the South West of England.
Dancing with Angels is an original folktale for adults. A young boy dances the
stories of his nation's history. Sent into war to encourage the
troops, the young man falters in the middle of battle and forgets the
dances. An angel tells him how he
can re-learn the dances. But - as in all good folktales - there's
a price to pay.
The boy sets off on a fantastical journey of discovery that stretches from the sublime to the ridiculous and finishes amongst the stars. Using the conventions of the oldest stories in the world, Dancing With Angels tells a tale for today.
"a dark and surreal satire ... cynical, wondrous and funny"
"Buffery and Nathanson turn in excellent, physical performances while asking questions about myth-making and nationalism. See this now, before our allies invade someone else." Winnipeg Free Press
