a context for the poems:
"I'd created a wall display in the foyer of " D" Block at Woldgate, where most of the pupils' English lessons take place, using your publicity posters and flyers. I'd also put posters and flyers up in our drama studios.
I put up notices inviting Year 7 pupils to write a poem, using the title of the play The Golden Key. The 3rd prize winner used the facts on the posters to create her poem, the 2nd prize winner wrote an acrostic poem, and the 1st prize winner used the title to create the wonderful narrative poem. All three will be with me on the front row - I'll bring along a copy of their poems on the day. I also told all my Year 7 English and Drama classes about the forthcoming production, inviting them to take part in the poetry competition, and to let their imagination soar.
I'm very keen for pupils to develop a love of language, and to just enjoy words; I've never subscribed to the school of thought that says let's just look at this paragraph and dissect it,seeing how many adjectives we can spot! I want to have the satisfaction of a complete story or poem, not just a taster, so why should I offer less to young people? Imagination is such a precious gift, and should be nurtured in the young.
You do just that with your wonderful drama, especially when it comes to such imaginative use of props. I'm hoping my pupils will
be as inspired by the performance as I've been when I've seen your previous productions."
